Thank you to Dr Theoni Lamaris who helped out on our ChiroMagic Saturday in October 2008

Helping kids realise
their potential as adults

The goal of our ChiroMagic4Kids program is to help children grow into healthy and happy adults of tomorrow. Regular paediatric assessments and adjustments enable abnormalities to be detected and corrected early so that kids can grow unhindered by the many health complications that result from vertebral misalignment and abnormal nerve interference. We speak to kids on their terms, involve them in their care and adjustments, and share with them how good habits lead to healthy, happy bodies. We also inform parents and caretakers about how to assess their children’s spine and posture, and what to monitor.

Most of all, we want to give kids, their parents, and caretakers the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ behind adopting good posture and habitual movements. We support parents with natural health alternatives for their children through our information programs, literature and our network of recommended paediatric health specialists. Families have exclusive access to our clinic on Saturdays and we give priority to children’s appointments during school holidays, sports seasons and school examinations. We begin with a thorough assessment of your child’s spinal and developmental health which is reviewed every six months. We are also delighted to offer podiatry assessments for children to help gain a wider understanding of weight distribution in posture and movement.

Your specialists in chiropractic paediatrics

Chiropractic paediatrics recognises that children’s health problems are different from adults’. At Wynyard Chiropractic, our two chiropractors have more than 30 years’ combined experience working with babies and children for the numerous ailments to which they are prone. Our lead chiropractor and founder John de Voy is currently undergoing a post-graduate diplomate program in Chiropractic Paediatrics with the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, a three-year full-time undertaking that will see him cross the Tasman countless times.

ChiroMagic Saturdays outreach service

ChiroMagic Saturdays are Wynyard Chiropractic’s free outreach service for all children who haven’t visited our clinic before or haven’t had an adjustment for some time. Held during NSW school holidays, we make these days fun for kids and involve them in their assessment and adjustment. We often invite along members of our network of preferred health specialists to give parents further alternatives in looking after the complete health of their child. All of this is complimentary, in the interests of widening accessibility of chiropractic services to our community.

Newborn and toddler chiropractic care

Chronic health problems often begin in utero, particularly if the baby adopts problematic breech, transverse, brow or posterior positions, which heighten the likelihood that vertebra and spine are pushed out of place. Medical interventions in birth, such as forceps, vonteuse suction, induction and even caesarean sections, which may appear less traumatic for the baby, can lead to further health complications for the baby. Many neurological issues can arise from these types of intervention.

Wynyard Chiropractic sees many newborns for thorough evaluations very soon after birth, frequently brought in by our chiropractic patients or by other parents who have been referred to us. Chiropractors Cody Hanish and John gently touch and examine each joint of the baby to determine if spinal irritation is present. Adjustments are performed using very light finger-tip pressure which is enough to restore mobility to vertebra and restore normal functioning of the nervous system. Babies often require minimal adjustments because their young spines are generally more responsive than adults’ to correction, and misalignments discovered shortly after birth don’t have the chance to become chronic.

Pre-natal chiropractic care

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is a safe, natural and effective solution for minimising and alleviating the many muscular, hormonal, and digestive discomforts that pregnancy creates. Hormonal changes during pregnancy enable a wider range of movement in joints and ligaments to help make the birth easier. Yet this also means women are more prone to spinal subluxations, or vertebral misalignment, and resultant discomfort or pain.

Studies suggest that not only do chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy heighten the likelihood of a straightforward labour, but that correct alignment of the mother’s pelvis and spine aids the baby’s development by ensuring there is optimum room to move and grow.

At Wynyard Chiropractic, we use the Webster in-utero Constraint Technique which has also been shown to be hugely beneficial in helping the baby adopt the optimum position for giving birth. Developed in 1978 by Dr Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association, the Technique safely restores pelvic alignment and function for pregnant women and is especially beneficial for babies in breech position. The Webster Technique not only reduces interference to the mother’s nervous system but facilitates biomechanical balance in the pelvic structure, muscles and ligaments, to enable baby to assume the best possible position for birth.
